(HealthDay News) — Have you noticed that some of your toenails are dark and discolored?

The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons says possible causes of dark toenails include:

  • A trauma to the nail. An example would be an object falling on the nail, causing formation of a bruise.
  • Though rare, a dark toenail can signal malignant melanoma.
  • A fungal infection of the nail.
  • A chronically ingrown nail.
