Every week we take a peek inside the lunches of the luckiest kids in Brooklyn. Read on, suppress your jealousy, and get a little brown bag inspiration.
I usually write about the lunches I make early in the week, right after I’ve had the weekend to build up our fridge supplies, and when I’m waking up with enough time to get everyone ready and take a photo of the lunch.
I’m probably not alone in this, but things tend to degrade as the week goes on. Food supplies grow spindly. An evening event causes me to hit the snooze button and the morning schedule gets frayed. Lunch gets shaky. So I thought I’d share a recent Friday lunch. I ran out of brioche buns so one kid got the bun, another got whole wheat bread (I’ll let them work this out in therapy later). There was no lunch meat or sandwich makings, just cream cheese. So I spread the bread/bun with cream cheese and topped it with the last of the summer’s heirloom cherry tomatoes (they look pretty but truthfully, they tasted pretty wan — which I figured the cream cheese would help mask). The brown lumps in the photo are fairly stale chocolate macaroons from Whole Foods Market. But lunch was packed on time, and my kids made it through the day. #perfectparent
