Hotels are an expansive operation. There are many factors that keep a hotel running smooth. A hotel manager oversees all the aspects of the hotel. A hospitality program graduate may begin a career in the hotel industry working as a concierge or desk attendant. Eventually, gaining experience and knowledge about the hotel business regarding accommodations, appearance, customer service, and cleanliness, hotel employees can work their way up to management. Hotel managers are responsible for the scheduling and training of employees working in housekeeping, maintenance, and food and services. They handle the financial aspects of the business, keeping costs down while maintaining high standards for the hotel.

Restaurant Management

Similar to hotel management, restaurant managers usually need to start at entry-level positions and work up to higher levels of management. It is important to understand all the inner-workings of the restaurant business before anyone can manage it. Employees start out as waitstaff, bartenders, or sommeliers, and with a hospitality degree, can work up to management. Food managers must understand food theories and how it applies to food management and production. They also work alongside chefs, planning menus, creating dishes and setting prices. Managers also ensure health and safety standards are met, as well as service and cleanliness standards are up to par.

Food and Beverage Director

Larger organizations will employ a separate food and beverage director to oversee that aspect of the business. Casinos, cruise ships, and hotels are all substantial institutions that require a great deal of employees to ensure the business runs effortlessly day-to-day. Food and beverage directors oversee all the kitchen staff, bartenders and waitstaff, as well as inventory, and quality standards. As with hotel managers and restaurant managers, an employee will work up to this position with time, experience and a culinary arts program education.
